Job TREC Program

Job TREC (Job Training, Referral, and Education Center), is an employment and education assistance program for HUD-eligible homeless men and women in Clarke County. The program, administered by the Athens Area Homeless Shelter, was first funded by HUD in 1996. Since its inception, Job TREC has served over 3,100 homeless individuals with valuable supportive services designed to help them escape from homelessness once and for all. Residents of the Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Salvation Army, Project Safe, and other shelters in Clarke County, as well as people living on the streets are eligible for this program. When clients move out of shelter, they are provided 6 months of follow-up case management and Job TREC services.

Job TREC services include: case management; transportation to work or school (bus passes & cab vouchers); childcare; drug testing; work clothing & supplies; education & job training assistance; counseling for mental health or substance abuse issues; health related services: eyeglasses and job-related health exams; assistance with obtaining important documents needed for work or school; and six months of follow-up services once clients move into housing.

In 2005, the program served 299 unduplicated clients.

68% of Job TREC clients that entered the program unemployed during the program year gained employment within one month.

69% of Job TREC clients that gained employment maintained that employment for at least one month.

46% of Job TREC clients who left the program during the operating year obtained permanent housing.
